The Artistic Allure of Australian Water Dragons

This magnificent adult male Australian Water Dragon lives in the grounds of Queensland Art Gallery. His colour, texture, and folded forms resonate with my artistic aesthetic.


He’s perfectly happy to live side-by-side the coffee sippers at the outdoor gallery cafe. The adjoining shallow expanse of water draws both gallery patrons and the reptiles.

These lizards conjure up magical, mystical dragons of legend and myth. They are not that far removed from the dragon forms I painted some years ago.

Much of my work references nature.

Something of the water dragon will find its way into my creative process. But as you’ll see from the links below, the connections can be intriguing, not necessarily what you would imagine.
