There is a whole new genre of art generated by AI. However, many artists choose to use AI, not for creating art, but for doing ancillary tasks like marketing, creating titles, and providing descriptions of their work.

At a coffee catch-up with some Noosa Open Studio artists last week, the conversation turned to how difficult it is to give an artwork a title. Use AI someone suggested. With a deadline looming for submitting a work to the Noosa Open Studio Art Exhibition, I turned to ChatGPT. I downloaded a photo of my artwork to chatgpt.com and requested an AI-generated title for the painting.

ChatGTP delivered the goods in bucketloads. Talk about making a mere mortal feel inadequate! It churned out 29 titles, grouped under three sub-headings:

• Poetic
• Abstract
• Evocative

Just for good measure ChatGPT threw in the description of the work. Then it recommended one of the titles, going on to explain why it chose that particular title.

Still the AI title options kept coming. AI asked how did I want the title to sound?

• Fine art/gallery
• Mystical
• Contemporary abstract
• Commercially appealing

I was curious, but could see myself going down a time wasting rabbit hole.

I had a satisfactory result, so I decided to stop. ChatGPT had produced the words to convey something about the painting that I felt, but could not articulate.

What an amazing, clever, time-saving tool! Yet I found the whole process very confronting, almost spine-chilling.

I’m using the word ‘it’ deliberately to describe what is essentially a highly sophisticated generative production process. The Artificial Intelligent Learning tool interacted with me as if it were human.

Here’s how ChatGPT ‘spoke’ to me.

If I had to choose one title that best matches the painting’s airy, flowing, almost spiritual feel, I’d suggest:

It’s simple, memorable, and reflects the translucent ribbons of light and motion without defining exactly what the viewer should see.

At the coffee chat, AI got a big thumbs up. However my artwork will continue to explore the evolving relationship between humans and AI.

There’s plenty to question and explore about the application of computer systems that are able to perform tasks or produce output normally requiring human intelligence.

For the record. I went with ChatGPT’s title suggestion Ethereal Currents. It was one of the titles under the Abstract category that resonated with me. The painting has a sense of the immaterial, while conveying movement in other worldly space.
