Exploring the Unique Space of MONA in Tasmania

MONA. Museum of Old and New Art. Hobert, Tasmania.

The playground and megaphone of David Walsh. A temple to secularism, rationalism, and talking crap about stuff you really don’t know very much about. We won’t tell anyone. Come and play.

Carved out below the surface of the MONA site, the main museum building is a subterranean other world. Cavernous limestone spaces, complex lighting, and the raw, unembellished construction materials create a subversive space where viewing art involves a journey to a destination.

Here the scale changes, from soaring people-dwarfing spaces to confined, cramped areas and noisy tunnels. There are stairs ramps, platforms and various levels. The intensity and colour of light also changes dramatically.

The building structure and interior design supports each artwork in a bold, awe-inspiring way. See how beautifully these elements showcase specific artworks in my next MONA post.
