Kirkwell: home of discreet street art

The Orkney Islands are known for their archaeology – and I will get to that – not their street art. Graffiti is very much an urban art form in my mind, part of the gritty jumble of cities where built environments create ‘canvases’ in alley ways, underpasses, overpasses, abandoned buildings, and on unadorned walls.

I had to crouch on my haunches at a street corner to photograph this simple little piece of graffiti in Kirkwall, the Mainland, Orkney Islands. Black on white, hardly drawing attention to itself, a perfect unexpected gem.
