Pandora, barefoot, ivory-skinned, her blue robes trimmed with gold, holding a casket, tightly, with two hands. She seems to fly above me in the volume of this ship-like space with its billowing ceiling and angled windows, her skirt flowing gracefully as though propelled by the breeze. Aloft on the prow, but not free at all, constrained and wooden, tightly held in place adorning this life-sized model of the ill-fated HMS Pandora.
Find out more about the earliest recoded shipwreck on the Queensland coast (1771). HMS Pandora was the British Royal Navy warship dispatched to the South Pacific in pursuit of the infamous Bounty mutineers. The life-sized cut-out replica of HMS Pandora sits in a specially designed space setting the scene for a fascinating exhibition chronicling the journey and life on board. Hear about about the unique challenges of underwater archeology and discover artefacts retrieved from the bottom of the ocean. A visit to the Museum of Tropical Queensland in Townsville is definitely recommended.
