Postcards to Theresa May

Three digital prints, fine art photographic papeR

It was unimaginable. A journalist compared a British Prime Minister to a cockroach, algae and a mobile phone. The context was Theresa May’s second unsuccessful attempt to have a Brexit Deal passed by the British Parliament

Knowing that the claims about cockroaches are an urban myth, I looked up the Nokia 5210 out of curiosity, and started reading reviews from 2002 about the phone. Bizarre as it seems, Tom Peck had hit on something.
The words used to describe the Nokia seemed to speak of Theresa May and the political situation. In my imagination, the unusually shaped “on” “off” buttons suggested angry faces shouting; on the postcards they represent the “yes” “no” protests. After two more defeats, unable to get her Brexit deal through, Theresa May resigned on May 24, 2019. Tough yes, but indestructible, no.

Meanwhile the news cycle has long since overtaken Peck’s comments, the Nokia 5210 is a dinosaur in the fast-moving world of mobile phones, and, with the ubiquitous use of social media, postcards are quickly becoming a thing of the past too.
