Iris van Herpen’s Sculpting the Senses Exhibition asks for a deeper consideration than these few photos. It’s a “must see” exhibition at Goma, Queensland Art Gallery the first solo exhibition of her work in the southern hemisphere done in collaboration with the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Fashionistas and celebrity spotters will love it.
Be sure you leave time for the last room where manequins swoop from the ceiling and come off walls. Here the manequins are clearly the frames for the works. The suspension of the works disrupts the impression of a fashion show. My first photo ‘grounds’ the suspended model, tilting it forward giving it a kinetic quality. Movement is integral to van Herpen’s work.
Artists will appreciate the distillation of ideas into unique forms of artisitic expression, the depth of the processes, the inspirations and research. Sculpting the Senses showcases a masterful body of work that takes form through collaboration and by using innovative cutting edge technique. Don’t take my word for it. See for yourself.
