The 5.3 km Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk in the NSW border town of Albury features a series of stunning contemporary Aboriginal sculptures lining the Wagirra Trail from Kremur Street to the tranquil Wonga Wetlands.
Of the fifteen sculptures created by local Aboriginal artists, this group of Kookaburras (Guguburra) created by mixed media sculpture artist and local Wiradjuri man Peter Ingram uplifted me, as it resonated with my love of birds.
Gathered in a group as Kookaburras often are, they have such authenticity, especially the laughing bird with its spreading wings. The artist’s choice of material matches the boldness and celebratory nature of Kookaburras.
Guguburra is patient and kind. He will often let others (go) before him but will defend his ground if required. He loves to laugh and reminds us to do so each day. He travels in family groups, is loyal, but sometimes ventures out alone to visit a friend and sing them a beautiful song. Guguburra shows us a wonderful way to live our lives with joy, balance and patience.
From a story gifted to the artist by a friend whose totem spirit is the Guguburra.
