Artists imbue their spaces with their special creative character. But that is not always what a real estate agent sees as a selling point. Here’s what transpired when a textile artist invited a real estate agent to evaluate her home.
The real estate agent’s pitch
She opened her door to a smiling, smartly dressed real estate agent. As the tour began he spruiked the benefits of engaging his team. Real estate sales have moved in to the digital age, he told her.
“It’s all about the internet photos. That’s what draws the buyers in.” he said.
His top-notch photographer would create stunning photos including drone images of the house.
His stylist, who was a qualified interior designer, had the knack of giving a home a fresh, on-trend look.
She could style a house in a way that disguised any design faults, improving the over-all appearance and saleability.
The textile artist’s world
At that point, they arrived at her bedroom.
“I think your stylist might have a bit of work to do in here.” she said with a smile.
Her room, adorned with fabric creations and curated arrangements, had a warm inviting feminine feel – BoHo in interior design terms. It was an expression of her creativity.
As she stepped aside, the agent laughed, seeing her point. He immediately dropped his salesman’s persona.
Each was looking at her home through different prisms and enjoying the irony. For the artist, home was an expressive space to create and be creative in. For the real estate agent the house was a commodity that needed to have a wide appeal.
“It might not go down well with some buyers. But my stylist would really love you.” he said.
Artful advice for home selling
If you’re a celebrity artist, celebrate your creativity and leave your mark on your abode. You are the product. Chances the buyer wants the bragging rights.
For other artists considering selling. If you have a flamboyant style you might want to tone it down a notch or two.
What about styling? It’s great for making a not-so-good house more appealing. A well designed, liveable house that welcomes you in will always sell, no styling needed.
